The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder, and you’re caught up in traveling and hectic holiday plans – how can you make sure your ring survives this?!
We put together our best tips for making sure your engagement ring keeps both its structure and its shine in tact all winter long!
1. MAKE SURE IT FITS!
Colder weather means that your fingers likely contract a bit, which can make your ring fit a little looser than usual. If you are already wearing a roomier ring it will become more noticeable, so we recommend adding a sizing bead or sizing bar to keep the ring uprightduring wear. This also helps the ring to stay behind the knuckle and does not disrupt the appearance of your gorgeous ring! It can be easily removed but if you are looking for a more temporary fix, a small plastic ring coil can do the same job!

2. GLOVES ARE THE ENEMY!
Obviously, you should wear gloves to stay warm in the winter months, however we recommend taking your ring off entirely while wearing them. Even lower settings can catch the fibers of the material which can be detrimental to the prongs, as it can loosen them overtime, compromising its ability to hold onto your center stone. Additionally, the fit of gloves is typically on the tighter side, and any kind of consistent pressure or friction on the ring can warp or bend it, making it more susceptible to breakage.

3. DON’T SLEEP IN IT!
We recommend getting used to taking your ring off before bed all year long, however winter is the time spent snuggling under numerous blankets and sheets, which have those same destructive fibers. Keep in mind also – if you are moving around in your sleep and squash or bend your ring, you may end up in need of an entirely new setting!
Â
4. WATCH OUT FOR YOUR SWEATERS!
One of those most common ring injuries we see is bent prongs. This can easily occur if your ring gets caught in the knit of your winter sweaters and try to roughly tug it out, which can damage both your clothing and the ring itself! Fiber build-up under the prongs can also make your ring appear hazy or dirty – which takes away from its amazing brilliance! You can of course still wear your ring while wearing a sweater, just be mindful of its placement on your hand!
Â
5. TRAVEL SMART!
We highly recommend keeping a ring box or pouch on your person so that you can swiftly remove your ring and keep it safe. Most clients want to wear their new bling all day every day, but if you want to have it for years to come, protect your investment the right way! That means taking it off when necessary and cautiously storing it where it can’t be misplaced or destroyed. It is also important to insure your ring to make sure that if anything happens to it over the holidays, that you will be safely covered!
Â
6. BEWARE OF LOTIONS, OILS, & COOKING PRODUCTS!
Diamonds and gemstones attract greasy substances like a magnet, which can make your diamond look cloudy and hazy. Of course, there's nothing like receiving your favorite hand and body creams as a stocking stuffer, but make sure you take your ring off before applying! Even while cooking and baking, remove your ring to avoid things like butter, oil, and sugary syrups that can create the same muddled appearance on your center stone! For a quick DIY cleaning, mix some mild dish soap in water and soak the ring for a minute or two. Use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub away any remaining build up and let air dry!Â
